A Brief History of the Cape Town Eisteddfod

Cape Town Eisteddfod

Tracing its roots back to the 12th-century Welsh Eisteddfod, a storied cultural festival celebrating poetry and music, the Cape Town Eisteddfod has evolved significantly since its inception in 1903. Over the years, it has flourished thanks to various sponsors who have championed the cause of nurturing young talent.

Today, the Cape Town Eisteddfod stands proudly as a self-sustaining non-profit, passionately dedicated to advancing the Arts in the Western Cape. This success is largely attributed to the dedication and tireless efforts of a small group of volunteers. The backbone of the organization, including the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and Executive Committee, works relentlessly, convening regularly to address challenges and brainstorm strategies to captivate public interest.

In its rich history spanning over 122 years, the Cape Town Eisteddfod has seen the introduction of prestigious trophy awards, complemented by medals and monetary prizes. Each participant is honored with a certificate, graded by our esteemed adjudicators. The culmination of the year's events is marked by a celebratory Prize Giving ceremony. Recognizing the immense value of public performance, educators from various schools encourage student participation, often integrating Eisteddfod achievements into their own recognition systems. Notably, the Eisteddfod has been a launchpad for numerous professionals in their artistic journeys.

We extend heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and invite you to join our endeavor. Whether it's offering expertise or volunteering, your contribution can make a significant difference in keeping this venerable tradition thriving.
